Pieces

You take the pieces of the dreams that you have
Cause you don't like the way they seem to be going
You cut them up and spread them out on the floor
You're full of hope as you begin rearranging

Put it all back together

But anyway you look at things and try
The lovers are losing.

Keane - Lovers are losing

I've felt that way. For some time, and some years ago.
Apparently, transformation keeps being a core part of my life.

Fire, death, renewal, resurrection, life.

And sometimes, the rearrangement only comes with new pieces. I'm a collector, and the hard part is to leave some pieces out, not to include new ones. But some pieces go out in the end, some new pieces come in, and the new picture is completely different, and at the same time, the same: my life.

PS: Keane is coming to BA in march, I might go to see them, as an escort, if the new piece allows ;)

The heart of the 80s

It's been a while since I wrote anything in english, so here I go, for my international friends.

This week I've got my hands on "Huey Lewis and the News Greatest Hits". Wow. What a trip to the 80s.

Maybe it's not the greatest music ever done, but when I hear it, I hear the essence of the 80s. His voice, along with the big-shoulders, short sleeves red coat. Do I need to mention the molotov cocktail of "The power of love" (maybe their greatest hit) with Back to the Future, a really iconic movie of the 80s?

Lyrics aren't GREAT, but I feel a teen again when I hear "Stuck with you" or "If this is it".

Remembering good old times, it's almost a year since I moved. If I start listing all the things I've been through this year, anyone could easily say it's been the worse year of my life. I'm not so sure, but sure it's been tough. In any case, I feel that I can't just lay down my arms. I have the two most powerful reasons a man can have.

Step by step, one by one, higher and higher
Step by step, rung by rung climbing Jacob's ladder

Want some mate?

Everytime the subject of mate comes up in an international enviroment, it's a bit difficult to explain. Not the "like a tea" part, but the "sharing" part. I'm translating this text hoping it will shed some light on the matter.

Mate is not a drink. Well, ok, it's a liquid and goes down the throat. But it's not a drink.
In this country nobody drinks mate because he's thirsty. It's more like a habit.
Mate is the opposite to TV: it makes you talk if you're with somebody, and makes you think if you're alone.
When someone comes to your home, the first phrase is "hello", and the second "want some mate?".
It happens in every home. Between the rich and the poor. Between gossiping women and between serious or immature men. It's the only thing parents and children share without recriminations. On summer and winter. It's the only thing in common between good and bad people.
When you have a son, you give him mate when he asks for it. You make it warm, with lots of sugar, and they feel like grown ups. You feel a huge pride when that littlepartofyourblood starts drinking mate. Your heart leaves your body. After years, they will decide if they want it bitter, sweet, very hot, with ice, with orange, other herbs, with lemon.
When you met someone for the first time, you drink some mates. When there is no confidence, people ask "Sweet or bitter?". The other replies "as you like it".
Keyboards in Argentina have all the keys with yerba.
Yerba is the only thing that you always have, in every home. Always. Good times, bad times, hunger, militars, democracy, with any of our eternal curses. If one day you don't have yerba, a neighbor has and will give you some. You can't deny yerba to anyone.
This is the only country in the world where the choice of stop being a child and start being a man occurs in a particular day. No long pants, circuncition, university or living far from your parents.
Here we grow up the day we have the necessity to drink some mates... alone. It's not random. It's not just because. The day a kid prepares a mate and there's no one home, in that moment he has realized he has a soul. Or is scared to death, or deeply inlove, or something. It's no ordinary day.
None of us remember the day we drank mate alone for the first time. But it surely was a special day.
A simple mate is nothing more or less than a demonstration of beliefs...
Is the solidarity of stand those worn out mates because the conversation is good. The conversation, not the mate.
Is the respect in the times to talk and listen. You talk while the other drinks.
Is the sincerity of saying "that's enough, change the yerba!"
Is the sensitivity to boiled water.
Is the care of asking, stupidly, "it's a bit hot, right?"
Is the modesty of who's the better preparing it.
Is the generosity of giving until the end.
Is hospitality in the invitation.
Is justice of one each other.
Is the obligation to say "thanks" at least once a day.
Is the honest and loyal attitude of get together with no more pretense than sharing.

It still is a bit difficult to explain. Ok, I drink mate in the morning, as I would drink coffee or tea. But over all that, I value more what the mate means. In a way is explained up there. It's sharing. That's the part hard to explain outside Argentina. Yes, it's kind of a tea, that you drink in a cup with a straw. But you SHARE it. No, there's not one cup for each. We share the same one. For some, this is a bit gross :P
But it has its rewards. In the University, we shared a mate while in class, or while studying. It helps you stay awake, and it something else we are all sharing. When I started drinking mate in the morning, my parents kept drinking coffee, but they stayed five more minutes to share a mate with me. Once married, preparing the mate in the morning was a ritual that we also shared. When I went to Chaco in a mission, people who barely had enough to it offered you mate until your eyes went green. Sweet, with poleo, and very hot water, but you can't say no. You gather with some friends in the evening: the home owner makes the mate, the ones visiting brings the cookies.
It's so much more than just a drink for me. And I hope for you too.

I even fell obliged to write something in english for those out there who might come by. Yeah, I gotta admit that I'm not so fluid in english. I can do it, but it's a bit harder. I could be in my best after 10 days away from home and talking only english, but I've been with Jorge, Hector and Carlos. Every time we got together, we couldn't resist use some spanish. So going back and forth between spanish and english left my mind in spanish mode. I didn't even got the chance to speak portuguese. I stopped by to talk a bit with Romao, but he started to talk spanish.

Starting over

How many of you people out there
Been hurt in some kind of love affair
And how many times do you swear that you'll never love again?
How many lonely, sleepless nights
How many lies, how many fights
And why would you want to put yourself through all that again?
"Love is pain," I hear you say
Love has a cruel and bitter way
Of paying you back for all the faith you ever had in your brain
How could it be that what you need the most
Can leave you feeling just like a ghost?
You never want to feel so sad and lost again

One day you could be looking
Through an old book in rainy weather
You see a picture of her smiling at you
When you were still together
You could be walking down the street
And who should you chance to meet
But that same old smile that you've been thinking of all day

You can turn the clock to zero, honey
We're starting up a brand new day
Turn the clock all the way back
I'm thinking in a brand new way
Turn the clock to zero, sister
You'll never know how much I missed her
Starting up a brand new day

It could happen to you - just like it happened to me
There's simply no immunity - there's no guarantee
I say love's such a force - if you find yourself in it
And sometimes no reflection is there

Turn the clock to zero, honey
We're starting up a brand new day
Turn the clock to zero, Mac
I'm thinking in a brand new way

Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Starting up a brand new day
Stand up all you lovers in the world
We're starting up a brand new day

Yes, a couple of days listening to Sting...
Life is cyclical, and therefore the analogy of the phoenix that I love so much. You only have to remember that although there is a pattern, not every cycle is the same. If it is, you're not growing. Every phoenix is the same, but is a new one.

After a long year, I'm feeling like I'm ready to start a brand new day. Things that happened in the life of some friends have given me perspective at the same time that I managed to show them perspective from my experience. That's a sign that I moved on from the same cycle they're almost starting.

Hope and faith have pushed me through the darkness. Thank God (and mom, dad, and so many others) for it.

This is OUR song!

Lots of times I've heard that line. "This is our song!". Over my life I've matched songs with moments in my life, and more particularly with people. Girls. Girls that I liked, that I was emotionally involved with (those that were mutual or not). Some songs are lyric-related. That is, the lyrics mean something to me about what happened. Some songs not, it just the song in that time.

So let's turn on the fan and start burning people. Cronologically!

Carolina. Around 1985. Hawaiian Twist 2, Viuda e hijas de Roque Enroll.
I had a crush on her for like a couple of years. On 1986 she decided to give me a chance. Too late.
Lorena W. 1986-1988. Carrie, Europe. Another uncorresponded crush. That didn't mean we couldn't dance this song together in every freaking party we were together.
Mercedes. 1988. Llámame si me necesitas, M.M.Zas.
A very sweet friend in need of a shoulder. I AM a paladin, but I couldn't resist the distance. Once my feelings were out, the friendship was lost :(
Flavia. 1989. Muchacha ojos de papel, Spinetta.
Same story. Start of a pattern :P I was hearing this song in the radio one morning when I realized I wanted a bit more than friendship. She didn't.
Sandra. 1989-1990. Don't know much. Linda Rondstadt & Aaron Neville.
First real girlfriend.
Natty. 1990. Adoquines en tu cielo, Rosario, Baglietto.
She was from Rosario, as Baglietto, and this was the only time of my life I liked hearing to Baglietto. This song still reminds me of her. In a couple of months, and without even intending, she was very trascendent in my life. Yeah, I know, I was 17 and all that. Anyway.
Mariela. 1991. (Everything I do) I do it for you, Brian Adams and El 7 de septiembre, Mecano.
It all started as a friendship with mutual interests (specially the same career). It developed in a VERY good friendship, and my modus operandi jumped again. What if...? This time we agreed, and started dating. A couple of weeks later I was deeply in love, but I was the only one :( We tried to recover the friendship, and managed to do it in some way. Some distance was necessary, but when we met again in 1999 (during PT Washington DC) I felt like time hadn't pass and we were friends like 1991. She's back in Argentina, and we should get together more often, but somehow we don't.
Lorena R. 1992-1996. November Rain, Guns n' Roses. On 1992 I was listening much G'nR, and she liked it too very much. The first time I kissed her was in the park in front of the faculty. Right after that, it started to rain hard, a summer (november) rain. It was borderline weird. That marked this song as "our" from the beginning and when we broke up, the line "nothing last forever" was more appropiate.
Sil. 1997-2007. This was huge. We got married. We have a son. We're about to divorce. Several songs have been "our" the past years. Right now, if I had to choose, it's Come What May, from the Moulin Rouge movie.

Ok, there you are. Something more about music and the girls in my life. I hope this is no surprise to any of them ;)
Share your "our song".

FACE ME YOU...!!!!

During the meeting yesterday with my college mates they told me they also have Facebook accounts (also because this has been a conversation with other L3+ Magic judges this week). I decided to finally open mine. This is more to see other peoples pics than to upload mine, but whatever. :P
It's really surprising and scaring the kind of network that you can make with this tool, relating friends of your friend, and so on.
I'm still scared of uploading pics of Theo, so that will probably not be up to see.

Praise be the Net. All hail the web.

Names that give you power

-----------
I found a better name that the one I started with, totally temporary. From now on (but maybe not forever), it's going to be "The Unforgettable Fire". It had to do with fire. It also had to be music-related, since I started with songs that hit me with something.
In the end, I started this blog in one of those moments when I re-recognize and embrace that inner unforgettable fire, that invisible sun.

The Children of the 80s

We are the children of the eighties.
We are not the first "lost generation" nor today's lost generation; in fact, we think we know just where we stand - or are discovering it as we speak. We are the ones who played with Lego Building Blocks when they were just building blocks and gave Malibu Barbie crewcuts with safety scissors that never really cut. We collected Garbage Pail Kids and Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Pony and Hot wheels and He-Man action figures and thought She-Ra looked just a litle bit like I would as a woman. Big wheels and bicycles with streamers were the way to go, and sidewalk chalk was all you needed to build a city. Imagination was a key, It made the Ewok Treehouse big enough for you to be Luke and the kitchen table and an old sheet dark enough to be a tent in the forest. Your world was the backyard and it was all you needed. With your pink portable tape player, Debbie Gibson sang back up to you and everyone wanted a skirt like the Material Girl and a glove like Michael Jackson's. Today, we are the ones who sing along with Bruce Springsteen and The Bangles perfectly and have no idea why. We recite lines with the Ghostbusters and still look to The Goonies for a great adventure. We flip through T.V. stations and stop at the A Team and Knight Rider and Fame and laugh with The Cosby Show and Family Ties and Punky Brewster and what you talking' 'bout Willis? We hold strong affections for The Muppets and The Gummy Bears and why did they take Smurfs off the air? After school specials were only about cigarettes and step-families, the Pokka Dot Door was nothing like Barney, and aren't the Power Rangers just Voltron reincarnated? We are the ones who stil read Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, the Bobbsey Twins, Beverly Clearly and Judy Blume, Richard Scary and the Electric Company. Friendship bracelets were ties you couldn't break and friendship pins went on shoes - preferably hightop velcro Reebok - and pegged jeans were in, as were Units belts and layered socks and jean jackets and jams and charm necklaces and side pony tails and rats' tails. Rave was a girl's best friend; braces with colored rubberbands made you cool. The backdoor was always opened and Mom served only red Kool-Aid to the neighborhood kids - never drank New Coke. Entertainment was cheap and lasted for hours. All you needed to be a prnicess was high heels and an apron; the Sit'n'Spin always made you dizzy but never made you stop; Pogoballs were dangerous weapons and Chinese Jump Ropes never failed to trip someone. In your Underoos you were Wonder Woman or Spider Man or R2D2 and in your treehouse you were king. In the Eighties, nothing was wrong. Did you know the President was shot? Star Wars was only a movie. Did you ever play in a bomb shelter? Did you see the Challenger explode or feed the homeless man? We forgot Vietnam and watched Tiananman's Square on CNN and bought pieces of the Berlin Wall at the store. AIDS was not the number one killer We didn't start the fire Billy Joel.

In the Eighties, we redefined the Dream, and those years defined us. We are the generation in between strife and facing strife and not turning our backs. The Eighties may have made us idealistic, but it's idealism that will push us and be passed on to our children - the first children of the 21st Century.

Never forget-We are the Children of The 80s

You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway

Being considerate

Ok, I'm probably going to invite some people that don't speak spanish to check on this blog. Therefore, I'll have some entries in english. Sorry for those who doesn't speak english, and sorry for those who does that will have a hard time reading the other entries.
Shit happens :P
